The "Freshness Dilemma" of Birch Sap Is Exactly the Breakthrough Opportunity for Food Machinery
- China's birch sap industry grew rapidly from 2024 to 2025, with national annual collection exceeding 60,000 tonnes; Yichun harvested 47,500 tonnes in 2024 with an output value of RMB 317 million.
- In 2025, Yichun's birch sap collection rose 116.79% year on year, while enterprise output value increased 99.9%.
- The birch sap collection window lasts only about half a month each year from mid-to-late April to early May, and the sap may oxidize and spoil after just one day at room temperature.
- Jilin processors collect within 2 hours in the forest, maintain a 0–4°C cold chain throughout, and deliver directly to the plant in 40 minutes, while Heilongjiang companies emphasize a "golden six hours" ultra-fast storage and transport.
- Jilin Chucai Agriculture's new 100,000-tonne production line is equipped with more than 70 sets of advanced equipment, and Yichun's low-temperature microfiltration sterilization technology, developed with Jiangnan University, uses precise pore-size control to preserve the original microbial flora balance.
The sap flowing through the forests is becoming a red-hot new track. According to a report by China Green Times titled "Liquid Gold: Standardized Collection and Rational Consumption — Ten Questions and Answers on Birch Sap and the Birch Sap Industry," China's birch sap industry showed explosive growth from 2024 to 2025, with national annual collection exceeding 60,000 tons; Yichun City harvested 47,500 tons in 2024, with an output value of RMB 317 million. People's Daily reported in "Record of Transformation in the Yichun Forest Region" that in 2025 Yichun's birch sap collection volume grew 116.79% year on year, while enterprise output value rose 99.9%. But behind the boom lies a technical threshold that almost determines the industry's survival — preservation. The collection window for birch sap is extremely short, lasting only about half a month each year from mid-to-late April to early May; the sap is highly active and extremely prone to oxidation and spoilage, and may be ruined after just one day at room temperature. Companies in Jilin generally follow a process of "collection in the forest within 2 hours, constant-temperature cold chain at 0–4℃ throughout, and direct delivery to the plant in 40 minutes," while companies in Heilongjiang emphasize "golden six hours" ultra-fast storage and transport. It can be said that whoever locks in freshness first holds the market's pricing power. This hurdle is precisely a rich vein for the food machinery industry. First, collection and cold-chain storage and transport equipment are at the front line. From refrigerated transfer boxes in the forest and vehicle-mounted refrigeration equipment to pre-cooling stations at the place of origin, constant-temperature tanker trucks and large-scale cold storage, these form a complete fresh-keeping storage and transport chain. The newly built 100,000-ton production line of Jilin Chucai Agriculture, for example, is equipped with more than 70 sets of advanced equipment. As collection volumes climb toward higher capacity, demand for standardized equipment along this chain will continue to expand. Second, low-temperature sterilization and microfiltration sterilization equipment are the technical core. The "low-temperature microfiltration sterilization technology" developed by Yichun in cooperation with Jiangnan University is a typical example: through precise pore-size control, it preserves the original microbial flora in balance, reduces the browning rate to 0.3%, raises the vitamin C retention rate to 92%, and extends shelf life from 3 months to 18 months — it is precisely this breakthrough that has cleared the way for products to leave Northeast China and enter distant markets. Equipment such as low-temperature cold sterilization and membrane filtration that "remove bacteria without damaging nutrition" is becoming standard on high-end raw juice production lines. Third, concentration and deep-processing equipment open up profit margins. Raw juice has high transport costs and a limited shelf life, and deep-processed forms such as concentrated liquid, freeze-dried powder, functional beverages and microencapsulated popping beads keep emerging. Northeast Forestry University has already developed a birch sap hydrating popping bead using microcapsule embedding technology, and such innovations create clear demand for vacuum concentration, homogeneous emulsification, microcapsule granulation and aseptic filling equipment. Fourth, testing and quality control equipment is indispensable. Using refractometers to test sugar content at collection sites and monitoring bacterial colonies and nutrient retention during production both impose rigid requirements for inline testing and rapid quality inspection equipment — an increment that equipment companies cannot avoid in the era of quality competition. Of course, opportunity comes with rationality. It is understood that chaos in the market — inconsistent standards for "100% raw juice," large price gaps between north and south, and tastes that are hard to distinguish — has already cooled some of the enthusiasm. This means the industry is shifting from "staking out territory" to "winning on quality," and requirements for equipment are upgrading from "usable" to "stable, traceable and low-loss." For food machinery companies, the value of the birch sap industry lies not only in current orders but also in the path it has validated: grasp the process pain points of emerging raw materials and use equipment to solve preservation and deep-processing challenges, and you can gain an early advantage in the blue ocean. From cold-chain storage and transport to low-temperature sterilization, from concentration and filling to deep processing, an equipment market spawned by the "freshness dilemma" is waiting for prepared entrants.
