Food Packaging in 2026: Greener, Safer, Smarter
- Entering 2026, food packaging is being reshaped by three forces: green, safety, and intelligence.
- Beijing officially implemented China's first Guide for the Use of Green Packaging by Catering Delivery Merchants on September 1, specifying four principles—safety, reduction, easy recycling or degradability, and reuse—and applying differentiated measures to simple and sealed packaging.
- The EU's new packaging regulation took effect on August 12, targeting a 5% reduction in packaging waste by 2030 versus 2018 and a 15% reduction by 2040.
- Bio-based materials now have heat resistance and mechanical strength close to traditional petroleum-based materials, with some grades microwave-safe and oil- and leak-resistant, and they are already used in food delivery containers.
- Zhongrun's "Xiaoxian Box" combines a paper outer box with a stretch film, cutting plastic in meat preservation packaging by 60%, enabling easy paper-plastic separation and recycling, and winning a WorldStar award; international giants have also launched ice cream packaging containing 85% paper.
Entering 2026, the food packaging industry has seen a dense flow of developments: Beijing released the country's first green packaging guide for food delivery merchants, the EU's new product packaging regulation took effect, the new national standard for food-contact coatings came into force, and a batch of eco-friendly materials and smart packaging products were unveiled one after another. Policy and product moves intertwine, pointing to the same judgment — food packaging is being reshaped by three forces: green, safety and intelligence. Policies tighten, and green packaging moves from a "bonus" to a "must-answer question". On September 1 this year, Beijing's "Guide for the Use of Green Packaging by Catering Delivery Merchants" was officially implemented, specifying four principles — safety, reduction, easy recycling or degradability, and reuse — and classifying packaging into simple and sealed categories for differentiated measures. Almost simultaneously, the EU's new packaging regulation took effect on August 12, proposing a 5% reduction in packaging waste by 2030 versus 2018 and a 15% reduction by 2040. Policy is moving from "advocacy" to "constraint", and source reduction and recyclable design have become the new normal for companies. Material change: bio-based and high-paper-content packaging accelerate to market. Under green requirements, material innovation is the breakthrough point. Bio-based materials start from renewable feedstocks, and properties such as heat resistance and mechanical strength are already close to traditional petroleum-based materials; some categories can also be microwaved and are oil- and leak-resistant, and as capacity rises and costs fall they are already used in food delivery containers. The paper-based route is speeding up in step: Zhongrun's "Xiaoxian Box" combines a paper outer box with a stretch film, reducing plastic in meat preservation packaging by 60%, making paper and plastic easy to separate and recycle, and has won the "World Star" award; international giants have also launched ice cream packaging containing 85% paper. Packaging materials are moving from "single plastic" to "multi-material recyclable". Standards upgrade: food-contact safety supervision is stricter. While pursuing environmental protection, food-contact safety cannot be relaxed. "Coatings and Coatings for Food Contact Materials and Articles" (GB 4806.10-2025) was implemented on September 2, bringing coating supervision into a new stage of full-chain, high-precision control; labeling elements such as food-contact marks, implementation standard numbers and material composition have also become high-frequency focus points in supervisory spot checks. For producers, eco-friendly materials must likewise meet safety indicators such as migration limits — green and safety must be achieved simultaneously. Smart empowerment: packaging moves from "container" to "data entry point". The value of packaging is extending from "holding things" to "making things visible". Smart labels such as RFID are entering food retail, used to sense the freshness of fresh produce and reduce food waste; in the sustainability direction, smart labels seek compatibility with recycling systems, and some RFID labels have obtained recyclability technical certification, achieving "both traceability and environmental protection". The combination of smart packaging and the circular economy makes every package both a "data business card" and a recyclable environmental practice. Equipment and materials move toward the next stage in step. Green, safety and intelligence are not three parallel lines but are drawing ever closer: reduced and recyclable design, compliant and safe new materials, and labels that can sense and trace all require packaging equipment to evolve in step. For material companies, equipment makers and food brands, whoever puts these into practice first will stand sooner in the next round of competition.
