The 8 Standards of Packaging Quality
- There is currently no unified “eight standards” formulation for packaging quality; different sources use different numbers of dimensions, typically summarized as 5–8 core evaluation areas.
- Packaging quality assessment centers on protectiveness—preventing physical damage (thermal insulation, dust protection, light blocking, oxygen blocking, moisture protection), chemical change (oxidation, deterioration, corrosion), and biological contamination (microorganisms) within the shelf life—plus anti-theft and anti-counterfeiting.
- Beyond protectiveness, evaluation covers convenience and marketability, processing adaptability, hygiene and safety, cost reasonableness, and environmental performance, with materials required to be non-toxic and harmless, not migrate harmful substances, and waste easy to recycle and reuse in compliance with green packaging regulations.
- Outer packaging inspection breaks down into indicators such as neat appearance, clear printing, dimensional accuracy, material strength (compression resistance, moisture resistance), sealing performance, and functionality (easy opening, shock resistance).
- The mandatory national standard Requirements for Limiting Excessive Express Packaging, effective July 1, 2026, sets hard caps on three express packaging indicators—box fit, number of packaging layers, and tape usage—with failure on any one judged as excessive packaging.
There is currently no unified “eight standards” formulation for packaging quality; different sources give different numbers of dimensions, usually summarized as 5-8 core areas of evaluation.
Taken together, packaging quality is mainly assessed around the following aspects:
Protectiveness: preventing physical damage (heat insulation, dust protection, light blocking, oxygen blocking, moisture protection), chemical change (oxidation, deterioration, corrosion) and biological contamination (microorganisms) within the shelf life, as well as anti-theft and anti-counterfeiting
Convenience and marketability: easy to carry, open and display, and able to convey product value and appeal
Processing adaptability: materials are easy to form, packaging operations are simple, and they are compatible with the production process
Hygiene and safety: materials are non-toxic and harmless, do not migrate harmful substances, and safeguard consumer health
Cost reasonableness: the combined cost of materials, operations and transport packaging should be reasonable
Environmental performance: waste is easy to recycle and reuse, does not pollute the environment, and complies with green packaging regulations
Outer packaging inspection also breaks down into specific indicators such as neat appearance, clear printing, dimensional accuracy, material strength (compression resistance, moisture resistance), sealing performance and functionality (easy opening, shock resistance).
It should also be noted that the mandatory national standard Requirements for Limiting Excessive Express Packaging, which took effect on July 1, 2026, sets hard caps on three indicators for express packaging — box fit, number of packaging layers and tape usage. Failure to meet any one of them is judged to be excessive packaging.

Recently, the Tropical Crop Origin Processing Team of the Institute of Processing, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) systematically elucidated the regulatory mechanism of metal ions on the structure, properties and food preservation functions of spent coffee grounds-based films, providing new ideas for the high-value utilization of spent coffee grounds and the development of degradable food packaging materials. As the main by-product of the coffee industry, spent coffee grounds are produced in huge quantities globally each year, but most are landfilled as waste, which easily causes environmental problems such as water pollution and methane emissions. It is worth noting that,
