Construction Begins on Hong Kong's First Near Food-Grade Plastic Recycling Facility
- Hong Kong's first near food-grade-quality plastic recycling facility broke ground on September 25 at Lot T6, EcoPark, Tuen Mun; Baguio Waste Management & Recycling Limited leased the site from the Environmental Protection Department for 20 years and operates it as New Life Plastics Limited.
- Scheduled for completion in 2020, the facility is designed to process and recycle 35,000 tonnes of waste PET and HDPE annually, handling over 100 tonnes per day, with about two-thirds of capacity for PET and one-third for HDPE.
- Jointly created by Baguio Waste Management & Recycling, Swire Coca-Cola, and the ALBA Group, the facility will become Hong Kong's largest plastic recycling facility of its kind upon completion.
- The facility will have three processing streams, converting sorted PET and HDPE into near food-grade rPET flakes and high-end rHDPE pellets for use as raw materials in high-quality consumer or industrial products, extending reusable plastic life and reducing landfill or ocean plastic leakage.
- Swire Coca-Cola launched the Drink Without Waste initiative in 2017 and committed to using rPET across all Bonaqua mineral water bottles in Hong Kong, setting up 300 Bonaqua Water Stations, and launching a smart beverage plastic bottle collection machine with cash rebates.
Construction of Hong Kong's first plastic recycling facility capable of reaching near food-grade quality held its groundbreaking ceremony on September 25. The plastic recycling facility is being built on Lot T6 of the EcoPark in Tuen Mun, leased from the Environmental Protection Department by Baguio Waste Management & Recycling Limited for 20 years, and operated under the name "New Life Plastics Limited".
Upon completion in 2020, the facility will be able to process and recycle 35,000 tonnes of waste PET plastic (polyethylene terephthalate, or beverage plastic bottles) and HDPE plastic (high-density polyethylene, or personal care product plastic containers) each year.
"New Life Plastics" is jointly created by Baguio Waste Management & Recycling, Swire Coca-Cola and the ALBA Group. Upon completion at the end of next year, the facility will become the largest plastic recycling facility of its kind in Hong Kong.
Handling over 100 tonnes of PET and HDPE waste daily.
According to reports, the new facility is expected to process more than 100 tonnes of waste PET and HDPE plastic per day, of which about two-thirds of the capacity is for PET plastic and one-third for HDPE plastic.
The new facility has three processing streams in total, capable of converting sorted PET and HDPE plastic into near food-grade rPET flakes and high-end rHDPE pellets, for use as raw materials in high-quality consumer or industrial products. This recycling and reuse process extends the life of reusable plastic, thereby reducing plastic being sent to landfill or flowing into the ocean.
Patrick Healy, Chief Executive Officer of Swire Coca-Cola, said that Swire Coca-Cola launched the "Drink Without Waste" initiative in 2017 and made a series of commitments, including using rPET recycled plastic across the board to make all "Bonaqua" mineral water bottles in Hong Kong, setting up 300 "Bonaqua Water Stations" across Hong Kong, and the recently launched "smart beverage plastic bottle collection machine", which encourages consumers to recycle PET plastic bottles with cash rebates.

Recently, the Tropical Crop Origin Processing Team of the Institute of Processing, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) systematically elucidated the regulatory mechanism of metal ions on the structure, properties and food preservation functions of spent coffee grounds-based films, providing new ideas for the high-value utilization of spent coffee grounds and the development of degradable food packaging materials. As the main by-product of the coffee industry, spent coffee grounds are produced in huge quantities globally each year, but most are landfilled as waste, which easily causes environmental problems such as water pollution and methane emissions. It is worth noting that,
