2026 Eco-Friendly Packaging Trends and Global Policies
The 2026 White Paper on Eco-Friendly Packaging Trends points out that “paper instead of plastic” has moved from “optional” to “mandatory,” and fully degradable materials are spreading faster.
Policy drivers: the EU has entered a period of strict enforcement of its plastics ban since 2026, China's plastic restriction order is extending to third- and fourth-tier cities, and Switzerland has also passed a new law requiring a plastic packaging recycling rate of at least 55%.
Technological breakthroughs: the cost of fully degradable plant fiber materials has fallen by about 30%, the barrier performance of paper-based composite materials has improved substantially, and smart packaging (such as RFID and AR interaction) has become a new medium for interaction between brands and consumers.
Market opportunities: the paper packaging market is expected to reach 1.2 trillion yuan in 2026, the fully degradable materials market is expected to exceed 50 billion yuan, and minimal packaging and circular economy systems are becoming new trends.
In addition, Nanfang Dairy recently issued a 1.25 million yuan tender for the supplementary procurement of e-commerce air bubble columns to shore up logistics packaging protection; the State Post Bureau also said it will produce a promotional video on “bamboo as a substitute for plastic” to promote recyclable, easily recoverable green packaging.
