Fresh Convenience Dishes Group Standard One Month On: Opportunities and Equipment Upgrades in the Short-Shelf-Life Fresh Food Segment

Led by Dingdong Maicai and jointly compiled with Suzhou Xiaomeiyuan Food, Yijiafengchu (Hangzhou) Food, Suzhou Weizhixiang Food and other enterprises, the Fresh Convenience Dishes group standard has been published on the National Group Standard Information Platform and has been in effect since September 20, 2026; it is now one month old. As the first group standard in this field in China, it fills the standardization gap in this segment and pushes this fast-growing category to a new starting point where there is a standard to follow. For food machinery and equipment enterprises, the implementation of the standard means changes in both demand structure and entry thresholds.

Fresh convenience dishes grow within the larger prepared-dish market. According to iiMedia Research data, the domestic prepared-dish market is expected to exceed RMB 749 billion in 2026. Among them, fresh convenience dishes, characterized by short shelf life and refrigerated storage, have differentiated advantages such as a taste closer to freshly cooked food, high ingredient freshness and healthier seasoning, with annual growth exceeding 35%, making them the fastest-growing subcategory in the entire market.

Behind the high growth, unified rules have long been lacking: vague category definitions, uneven processes, inconsistent preservation standards and non-standard labeling make it difficult for consumers to distinguish products, and compliant enterprises also lack a reference. According to Dingdong Maicai, its sales of fresh convenience dishes grew 91.5% year on year from January to September 2026, with growth exceeding 120% from June to September; the platform has launched nearly 90 SKUs, and bestsellers such as stir-fried yellow beef and pickled cabbage fish have reached daily sales of over 5,000 portions at peak. The volume growth of leading platforms confirms the real demand for short-shelf-life fresh food and amplifies the urgency of a unified standard.

The standard clearly defines the terminology and product classification of fresh convenience dishes: using fresh ingredients as the main raw materials, without actively adding preservatives, stored and transported under cold chain, and ready to eat after simple cooking. It sets requirements for raw materials, sensory and physicochemical indicators, and particularly emphasizes that products must be refrigerated at 0°C–4°C and that frozen storage and transport are prohibited, safeguarding the word fresh at the standard level; it also unifies inspection rules, labels and markings, packaging requirements and shelf-life calculation methods, covering the entire chain from raw material acceptance, processing and production, hygiene control, preservation and storage, cold-chain distribution, packaging labeling to inspection and judgment.

Once the standard is implemented, the industry will most likely evolve along three lines. First, fresh food and short shelf life will become mainstream, and products competing on preservatives and long shelf life will be further differentiated. Second, competition will shift from expanding scale to competing on quality and brand, with stable taste and safety becoming key to repeat purchases. Third, scenarios will continue to expand; in addition to home-style stir-fries, new categories such as family gatherings, autumn and winter nourishment, and regional-flavor fresh hot pot bases will keep emerging, and the standard will iterate in application and drive broader implementation.

The standard turns fresh from marketing rhetoric into testable indicators, directly affecting equipment demand. Looking along the production process, the relevant opportunities are concentrated in several stages:

  • Pretreatment: fruit and vegetable washing, peeling and cutting (shreds, slices, dices, strips) lines, adapted to the requirements of no-wash, no-cut and uniform specifications, reducing ingredient loss.
  • Processing and freshness locking: tumbling and marinating, gentle cooking and rapid cooling equipment, as well as modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) machines, combined with high-barrier packaging to extend the short shelf life at 0–4°C.
  • Inspection and back-end: metal and foreign object detection, weighing and labeling, and back-end cartoning equipment, connected with refrigerated cold chain to meet labeling, shelf-life and traceability requirements.

The threshold is also rising. The standard requires low-temperature and hygiene control throughout the process; equipment must use food-grade stainless steel, be easy to clean in structure, and be suitable for clean workshops; short shelf life and high-frequency production require flexible production lines, rapid changeovers and improved capacity turnover. For machinery enterprises, the opportunity is not just single-machine sales, but providing compliant supporting solutions around fresh-cut vegetable processing and central kitchen complete lines, turning standard compliance into a product selling point.

The group standard is only the starting point of quality upgrading. As short-shelf-life fresh food moves from concept to scale, stable processing equipment and compliant production lines are precisely the foundation that allows this business to be sustainable in the long term.
