Why Use Eco-friendly Packaging
- As environmental issues become more prominent, people increasingly recognize the importance of environmental protection and strongly support green eco-friendly materials in packaging design, making the development and use of new eco-friendly materials a common global goal.
- Under new environmental concepts, packaging design is moving toward simplified and lightweight models, favoring eco-friendly materials such as degradable materials and natural polymer compounds that do not pollute the environment and are often abundant in nature and renewable to meet sustainability demand.
- Traditional packaging materials are typically non-degradable, taking a large amount of time to decompose in soil—some as long as several decades—and incineration generates large amounts of sulfurous polluting gases that are highly harmful to the air environment.
- New green eco-friendly materials have stronger self-degradation ability, can be effectively decomposed in a short time when buried, and their decomposition products can enhance soil fertility, promote crop yields, and effectively avoid environmental pollution.
As environmental problems become increasingly prominent, people are gradually realizing the importance of environmental protection and strongly supporting the application of green eco-friendly materials in packaging design; developing and utilizing new eco-friendly materials has become a common global goal.
Saving natural resources Under the influence of new environmental protection concepts, product packaging designers have abandoned the previously cumbersome packaging design process and instead increasingly seek simplified and lightweight design models. In the selection of packaging materials, they favor eco-friendly materials such as degradable materials, natural polymer compounds and other materials that will not pollute the environment; such materials often have abundant reserves in nature and are renewable, thus meeting people's current demand for sustainable development.
Reducing environmental pollution Discarded packaging materials are usually treated by incineration or burial, but traditional packaging materials cause serious pollution to the natural environment in both the incineration and burial processes. Non-degradability is a common characteristic of traditional packaging materials, so when buried in soil they need a large amount of time to be effectively decomposed, some even taking as long as several decades to be completely decomposed. Even if incineration is chosen, it produces large amounts of sulfurous polluting gases after burning, which are highly harmful to the air environment. New green eco-friendly materials, however, do not have such problems; new materials have stronger self-degradation ability and can be effectively decomposed in a short time when buried in the land. In addition, the decomposition products can effectively enhance soil fertility, promote the yield of crops grown on the land, and effectively avoid pollution to the environment.

Recently, the Tropical Crop Origin Processing Team of the Institute of Processing, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) systematically elucidated the regulatory mechanism of metal ions on the structure, properties and food preservation functions of spent coffee grounds-based films, providing new ideas for the high-value utilization of spent coffee grounds and the development of degradable food packaging materials. As the main by-product of the coffee industry, spent coffee grounds are produced in huge quantities globally each year, but most are landfilled as waste, which easily causes environmental problems such as water pollution and methane emissions. It is worth noting that,
