Amcor Solutions has released a new European survey focused on the purchasing habits and packaging preferences of wet pet food consumers. The survey covered six countries—France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK—and a total of 2457 wet pet food buyers.

The survey shows that the core decision factors for consumers when choosing wet pet food are ingredients and nutrition, price and perceived quality, followed by pack size and ease of use; among them, wet dog food buyers have higher requirements for packaging practicality.

In terms of packaging demands, freshness preservation is the first priority, followed in order by convenient feeding, precise portion control and easy opening; easy storage and clean, hassle-free use are also advantages consumers value.

This survey compared three mainstream packaging types: traditional aluminum trays, smooth aluminum containers and metal cans. The key data are as follows:

  1. Traditional aluminum trays: 60% of respondents said they would definitely or probably buy them, with purchase intent on par with cans; 40% of respondents considered them easy to open; 30% recognized them as safe to open, more than double the share for easy-open cans (12%).
  2. Smooth aluminum containers: standout appearance and pouring experience; 52% of respondents considered them modern and attractive, 42% found them easier to pour; 38% of consumers perceived them as more environmentally friendly.
  3. Metal cans: their advantage is concentrated in storage convenience, with 39% of consumers choosing cans because they are easy to store.

Sarah Nielcorn, Market Insights Manager at Amcor, said: today's pet owners have higher expectations of packaging value; practical attributes such as freshness preservation, easy opening and convenient feeding are essential, and consumers' established impressions of different packaging types directly influence their purchasing decisions. Brands need to balance functionality and convenience to match pet owners' real needs.

Amcor also noted that pet food brands expanding in the European market need to keep up with regulatory changes, with particular attention to the compliance requirements brought by PPWR, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.
